This document proposes an extension to the [NodeInfo schema](http://nodeinfo.diaspora.software/ ) ([FEP-f1d5](https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src/branch/main/fep/f1d5/fep-f1d5.md )) that would allow developers of Mastodon and Mastodon-like servers to unambigiously communicate the operations their servers support, and allow developers of software that interoperates with those servers to detect those features, promoting interoperability and easier adoption of new features.

FEP 6841: Specifying ActivityPub extension support with NodeInfo ( #278 )

Motivated by the need to know if a remote server supports a particular ActivityPub extension, I've knocked this proposed solution together based on defining extension IRIs, and adding them into a server's NodeInfo response.
I'm totally open to changing pretty much anything about this, it's as much a prompt for discussion as a completely thought-out proposal.

Changes in this revision:
- Expanded the second paragraph to make it more explicit that this is a description of existing practice.
- Changed the terminology to use "home instance" and "target instance". Mentioned that these are equivalent to the terms "IdP" and "RP" used by other authentication protocols.
- Mentioned that the home instance has a chance to apply policies such as requiring the user's explicit consent.
- Clarified that public keys can be discovered in a variety of ways but that this document focuses on using ActivityPub for this purpose.
- Added a note on the purpose of the X-Open-Web-Auth header field.
- Mentioned that unused tokens are deleted after a timeout.
- Other miscellaneous adjustments based on review comments.

4: Doesn't require FEP-7628.
5 and 6: FEP-ef61 is Helpful because it makes data migration easier.
FEP-8b32: required for FEP-ef61
FEP-521a: required for bootstrapping FEP-8b32, but not required for FEP-ef61
FEP-7628 push and pull modes: good idea, I shall use this terminology in the FEP.

For the WebFinger spelling correction, I used the official name of the protocol per [rfc7033](https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc7033 ). The other non-URL references to WebFinger in the document use alternative casing ("Webfinger", "webfinger"). I didn't change those but I'm willing to do it. Let me know.
